worn out

end of year in first grade

Worn out

I have just finished the end of my 29th year.  I truly enjoy teaching, but the demands of the job seem rougher as I get a bit older.  I am ready to enjoy a relaxing summer---go on vacation with one of our daughters and two of her friends and get through the clutter of the house and straighten it up.

It is the emotional part of the teaching job that wears on me. Seeing so many children without one of their parents, physical and sexual abuse victims, poverty, growing numbers of special ed needs, and behavior problems I never dreamed I would see in a classroom.  These things have all increased in the past 5 years.  We are a small town, but have inner-city ghetto problems.

I will feel renewed some after I have had 3 months of rest (including 3 classes I will take to help inspire me).  Are any of the rest of you overwhelmed with the problems your students face?

I noticed behavior problems increasing a lot over the years too.  Usually, the kids with the problems aren't getting what they need at home.  Of course, this isn't always the case.  I guess all you can do is help them as much as you can while they are at school.  Enjoy your summer break.  The vacation sounds like fun.

I only get 2 months.  Then back to work.  I remember the old days when we got more time off.  However, We get one week off in the fall and one week off in the spring.  We used to get two and then they added more days to the school calendar in AZ so now we only get one week off at a time.  Our new super thought we should take 5 three day weekends instead.  I turned and looked at him and asked him how i was supposed to visit my grands or my 90+ year old parents in 3 day weekends.  He had nothing to say.  So, we reduced it to one week off in fall and spring.  I personally would have rather gone longer into the summer and still had 2 weeks off for both.

About emptynester

This coming year will be my 31st year of teaching. I like my job, but I am becoming increasingly tired and worn out at certain times of the year like May, September, and December. I hope to talk to other teachers to help me keep charged up so I can do my best for my remaining years of teaching. We have a lot of poverty in our area, so we have an increasing number of special ed students and child abuse incidences.
